Hotel Astoria Vienna

Nestled in the heart of Vienna, the Hotel Astoria stands as a testament to both history and modernity. Built in 1912 by the visionary hotelier Anton Hanl, the Astoria embodies the opulence of the "fin du siècle" era while boasting a central location that has made it a focal point in Vienna's landscape for over a century.

With its grand opening, the Hotel Astoria heralded a new era of hospitality in Vienna, proudly showcasing 125 rooms adorned with the latest amenities of the time, including hot and cold running water, telephones, and central heating – luxuries that were unparalleled in the city. The introduction of electric clocks and an innovative ozone-based air conditioning system added to its allure, making it a beacon of modernity and comfort.

Under the management of Mrs. Hanl following her husband's passing in 1929, the Hotel Astoria flourished as a social hub, welcoming esteemed guests from Vienna's high society as well as notable figures from around the world. Throughout its storied history, the hotel played host to a myriad of luminaries, including diplomats, scientists, politicians, and international celebrities such as Clemens Krauss, Maria Jeritza, Orson Wells, and Sonja Ziemann.

However, the tumultuous events of the Second World War left an indelible mark on the Astoria, as it endured occupation by both Russian forces and the Royal Air Force. Despite the challenges, the hotel emerged resilient, embarking on a comprehensive renovation effort in 1948 under the stewardship of Mrs. Hanl's heirs. This transformative period saw the refurbishment of all rooms, an increase in the number of bathrooms to 81, the installation of two modern express lifts, and a complete facelift of the facade, restoring the Astoria to its former glory.

In 1978, the Österreichische Verkehrsbüro AG assumed control of the hotel, initiating a series of ongoing renovations to ensure its continued splendor. March 2005 marked a significant milestone in the Astoria's journey, with a substantial portion of its rooms undergoing a revitalization to marry traditional elegance with modern comforts, further cementing its status as a premier destination in Vienna.

Today, the Hotel Astoria stands as a harmonious blend of tradition, historical charm, Austrian hospitality, and Viennese coziness, offering guests a truly unique and enriching experience. As a proud member of the Austria Trend Hotels, the Astoria distinguishes itself not by ostentatious luxury, but by its unwavering commitment to providing a warm and inviting atmosphere. Its proximity to the Vienna State Opera has made it a favored haunt of artists, politicians, and luminaries such as Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, James King, and Leonard Bernstein, ensuring its place as a cherished landmark in Vienna's illustrious tapestry.
