Early Beginnings and Vision
In 1934, the Patagonia and Andean region of Argentina was an untouched wilderness, characterized by its breathtaking landscapes and unspoiled natural beauty. Recognizing the potential for tourism, the Argentine government established the Nahuel Huapi National Park that same year. This move marked the beginning of a transformative era for the region, aimed at fostering tourism, founding new towns, and improving communications.
Architectural Excellence
Architect Alejandro Bustillo was commissioned to design and construct an international hotel that would serve as the centerpiece of this grand vision. Bustillo selected the Puerto Pañuelo area for its stunning natural scenery and the convenience of its port. He opted for a design reminiscent of Canadian homes, utilizing cypress logs and larch tile roofing. The result was a majestic structure that harmonized with its surroundings. The hotel officially opened its doors to the public on January 9, 1938.
Tragedy and Rebirth
Tragically, on October 26, 1939, a devastating fire razed the original building to the ground. Demonstrating remarkable resilience and commitment, the hotel was reconstructed and reopened just over a year later, on December 15, 1940. Over the subsequent decades, Hotel Llao Llao became a favored destination for aristocrats, government officials, diplomats, and celebrities from around the world.
Challenges and Revival
Despite its success, the hotel faced significant challenges. It closed in 1978 and remained shuttered for 15 years. However, the legacy and spirit of the hotel endured. In 1993, the hotel was reopened under a new name: Llao Llao Hotel & Resort, Golf-Spa, continuing its tradition of excellence and luxury.
Expansion and Modernization
In December 2007, the hotel expanded with the addition of the Lago Moreno wing. This new section, known as Llao Llao Deluxe Suites – Moreno Lake Wing, was strategically built to offer guests unparalleled views of Moreno Lake and Mount Tronador. The wing features 43 elegantly appointed rooms, including Deluxe Studios and Suites, two Master Suites, and one Royal Suite, further enhancing the hotel's reputation for luxury and comfort.
Strategic Location
Hotel Llao Llao is ideally situated within the Nahuel Huapi National Park in Argentine Patagonia. Nestled between the Nahuel Huapi and Moreno lakes and surrounded by majestic peaks such as Mt. López, Mt. Capilla, and Mt. Tronador, the hotel offers an idyllic retreat. It is located:
