The Ambassador Chicago, formerly known as the Ambassador East, is a historic hotel that has been a fixture in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood since 1926. The hotel holds a unique place in pop culture history, not only for its luxurious accommodations but also for its iconic restaurant, The Pump Room.
The Ambassador East gained national recognition after being featured in Alfred Hitchcock's suspenseful thriller "North by Northwest." The scene featuring Cary Grant's character famously depicts him arriving at the hotel, disheveled and desperate, after a harrowing chase by a crop duster in a cornfield. His frantic request to the valet, "How quickly can you get a suit sponged and pressed?" became an unforgettable line, forever etching the Ambassador East into the minds of moviegoers.
Beyond its brush with Hollywood fame, the Ambassador East was renowned for its in-house restaurant, The Pump Room. Opened in 1938 by hotelier Ernie Byfield, The Pump Room quickly established itself as a Chicago institution. The restaurant boasted an extensive menu and an ambiance that exuded elegance and sophistication. Celebrities flocked to The Pump Room, drawn by its impeccable service, delicious food, and lively atmosphere. The restaurant became so popular that it was mentioned in various forms of media, including books, song lyrics, and newspaper articles. Lucius Beebe, a renowned gourmand, author, and journalist, frequently referenced The Pump Room in his writings, adding to its prestige. Arturo Petterino, the restaurant's maitre d' for many years, became a celebrity himself, holding court and guiding A-list patrons to the coveted Booth One, a prime spot for Chicago's elite.
Sadly, The Pump Room closed its doors in 2017, marking the end of an era. However, the Ambassador Chicago continues to operate, carrying on the legacy of its glamorous past. The hotel has undergone renovations and now offers modern amenities while retaining its historic charm. Today's guests can still experience the grandeur of this architectural gem, a place that once played host to Hollywood stars and Chicago's social elite. Whether reminiscing about Cary Grant's iconic line or simply enjoying the luxurious accommodations, the Ambassador Chicago offers a unique blend of history, sophistication, and modern comfort.
