The Grand Hotel del Paraguay

The Grand Hotel del Paraguay boasts a rich history that stretches back to 1873. In that year, Dr. Andreuzzi arrived in Paraguay and acquired a property steeped in local lore. Previously, it had belonged to the last Spanish governor and then to the captivating Madame Lynch, who accompanied Paraguayan President Francisco Solano López until his death in 1870.

Dr. Andreuzzi transformed the property into a multifaceted destination, christening it "Cancha Sociedad." It served as a hotel, a summer theater, the country's first skating rink, and offered other rustic amusements. This idyllic retreat became a popular gathering place for President López, his generals, and close friends, who sought respite from the burdens of power with plays, dances, and merriment.

Dr. Andreuzzi's ambition extended beyond the walls of Cancha Sociedad. He partnered with Dr. Morra to secure a concession for a railway line, the "Universal Conductor," which ran from Plaza Uruguaya (formerly Plaza San Francisco) directly to his property. This innovative addition facilitated the arrival of renowned Italian theater companies. The Grand Hotel del Paraguay witnessed unforgettable performances, including Puccini's "La Boheme" by Maestro Cendakli in 1902 and "Tosca" by Maestro Barbat in 1903.

The hotel's reputation transcended national borders. Former Argentinian President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento became a guest upon his arrival in Asunción. A warm friendship blossomed with Dr. Andreuzzi, who gifted Sarmiento land for his residence. This very site, now home to the National Library, witnessed Sarmiento's life and passing.

In 1909, Enrique Weiler, son of Don Guillermo Weiler, a pioneer in Paraguayan hotel management, assumed the mantle of manager, a position he held until 1913. In 1921, Don Enrique acquired the establishment, then known as Hotel Cancha Sociedad, and bestowed upon it its current name: Gran Hotel del Paraguay. His dedication to hotel management was recognized by the Paraguayan Government in 1966 with the "honor to the merit award."

Despite modernization and the addition of comfortable rooms, the Grand Hotel del Paraguay has gracefully retained its colonial charm. The original construction serves as a foundation, seamlessly integrated with modern amenities. On balmy days, the dappled shade of trees and verdant foliage create a haven of tranquility, perfect for those seeking a retreat amidst the urban landscape.
